Nota a la descripción física: Frontispiece of Belgia engraved by Abraham de Bruyn after Crispin van den Broeck (*1v; see Voet). T.p. printed letterpress within engraved border (*2r). Engraved arms of Philip II of Spain pasted on *2v within border of the arms of the 17 provinces of the Low Countries. This accords with Voet's description of earlier eds., whereas for this ed. he describes the arms as being printed from a 2nd plate in the central reserve of the engraved border. The arms are in Voet's variant 3, with the pendant golden fleece facing left (see under no. 1278, the ed. of 1582). Philip's port. on the facing page (*3r) is in fact printed from a 2nd plate within its border of allegories of the arts and sciences. It to is in Voet's variant 3, with one of Philip's titles reading ARCHIDVX AVSTRIAE. Woodcut arms of Guicciardini signed AVL for Antoon van Leest (*3v; see Voet). The 135 leaves of plates comprise 9 single-leaf plates and 63 double-leaf plates tipped in at the center fold. The 78 ill. that they bear are numbered in the plate at lower right. This sequence includes the in-text view of Antwerp on p. [82-83]. Most of the ill. are maps, city views or plans, but there are also views of some buildings in Antwerp (bourse, Senate House, cathedral, Hansa house), and a view of the Arx Britannica (ruins of a Roman fort at Katwijk). The plans of Tournai and Enkhuizen were engraved by Pieter van der Borcht and that of Cambrai by "a certain Pierre le Mesureur"; see Voet. (CERL: Oxford University)
