Among Japanese prints, the most well-known are those which represent themes such as beautiful women, actors, sumo wrestlers and warriors. However, the shinie genre has received less attention.
The Japanese ukiyoe print collection belonging to the Complutense University of Madrid has about fifteen prints belonging to the shinie genre. These prints have been studied by Matilde R. Arias Estévez, Pilar Cabañas Moreno, Ana Trujillo Dennis and Aitana Merino Estebaranz as part of a joint research project supported by the International Joint Digital Archiving Center for Japanese Art and Culture (ARC-iJAC; FY 2022-23) of the Art Research Center, Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto (Japan), in collaboration with the Library of the Complutense University in Madrid.
The present exhibition aims to explain the meaning and offer a socio-cultural contextualization to these works, which became popular in the mid-19th century.
