What happens after death?

Other deities

In the imaginary about what happens after death, the idea of a judgement is present. This act is presided by Emma, the great judge of the underworld in Japanese Buddhism. An oni presents the portrait of the actor for his trial, while a kind of lawyer presents his funerary tablet by way of identification.

In this composition the designer has gathered three deceased actors, representing them as different characters from the Buddhist afterlife. Fudō Myōō in blue and, probably, Bonten with a lotus flower as an attribute, and Taishakuten with his sword, dressed with the typical robe of a bosatsu.
