17:40: Visual results obtained with a keratoprosthesis depend upon the condition of the retina. Many eyes requiring prosthokeratoplasty, in addition to the corneal opacity, are affected with other intraocular changes that interfere in varying degrees with vision

In about 60 per cent of the cases vision improves from light perception and projection or counting fingers at close range to between 20/30 and 20/400. In the remaining eyes vision varies from light perception and projection to 20/400. Five per cent of the eyes eventually require enucleation
18:24: The Cardona-Castroviejo-De Voe team has performed over 170 prosthokeratoplasties and feels that after more than five years of clinical trial the operation is indicated in selected eyes with very unfavourable corneal opacities that cannot be treated successfully by transplanting corneal tissue
